After towel drying your hair, use a small amount of the mousse and run through hair then using a 'finger style' diffuser and low heat on your hair dryer without using your hands. I don't normally bother with a hair dryer but it certainly makes your hair stay in place all day. No frizzies or flyaways :) And the scent is amazing. So if you like mousses then this would definitely be one to try!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f-VfOAgCwLE/Tv1jFVTMiJI/AAAAAAAAAN8/VodjnlYWIRg/s1600/just+juice+3+pack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f-VfOAgCwLE/Tv1jFVTMiJI/AAAAAAAAAN8/VodjnlYWIRg/s320/just+juice+3+pack.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Mmm this was a very refreshing drink. The strawberry flavour was a bit stronger than the kiwifruit which is the right way around because you don't get an acidic aftertaste from the kiwifruit. It goes down very smoothly. Delicious, refreshing & perfect sweetness. My husband fell in love with it from the first mouthful. Perhaps I should be worried...</div><div style="text-align: center;">9/10</div>Rachel Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01658481375303769901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926988063384150126.post-65274241650917598052011-12-30T20:06:00.000+13:002011-12-30T20:06:14.402+13:00Product review: Just Juice Sunkissed orange<div style="text-align: center;">Product review of <a href="http://www.justjuice.co.nz/"><b>Just Juice</b></a> orchard range...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The first one of these juices we tried was the sunkissed orange. To be perfectly honest, it tasted just like any other orange juice out there on the market. I couldn't taste anything special about it. Perhaps it wasn't quite as strong or heavy as others (which is a good thing). It did however taste a whole lot better when drunk out of a glass rather then straight from the bottle! So for those who like the just juice range then this is a great option for your standard orange drink.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6xx-YzFqrMM/Tv1gZxpk6iI/AAAAAAAAANk/QcAk-dNzf4M/s1600/pack_cereal_cashew.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6xx-YzFqrMM/Tv1gZxpk6iI/AAAAAAAAANk/QcAk-dNzf4M/s1600/pack_cereal_cashew.png" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">This cereal has to be right up there with my all time favourite cereal, Sanitarium Toasted Muesli. Crunchy, full of flavour, sweet but not sickening, lots of coconut and nuts. Probably if I wanted to be really picky, I could say that adding cashews into a so called 'healthy' cereal is a bit of an oxymoron as cashews are right up there with being the worst type for you. If they added brazil nuts instead that would be great. The flavours of the nut are only subtle anyway and could do with a bit more intensity as well as more coconut. However it is very tasty and I have been enjoying it over the Christmas period. Great texture and a must for every family home as this is one I'm sure even the kids will enjoy :)</div><div style="text-align: center;">9/10</div>Rachel Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01658481375303769901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926988063384150126.post-64684480287447236502011-12-30T19:45:00.001+13:002011-12-30T19:49:37.354+13:00Product Review: Be natural 5 grain cereal<div style="text-align: center;">So we got sent these goodies in the post just before Christmas. I'll be doing a few reviews over the next couple of weeks when I get time.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dtAu4_bfCg4/Tv1dztQifUI/AAAAAAAAANY/QrCCYQXJ6C0/s1600/pack_cereal_grain.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dtAu4_bfCg4/Tv1dztQifUI/AAAAAAAAANY/QrCCYQXJ6C0/s1600/pack_cereal_grain.png" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">The first one is for the new <a href="http://www.benatural.com.au/Home.aspx"><b>Be Natural</b></a> range of cereals. I quite like a good bran cereal and it helps knowing that this one is packed full of goodness without the unnecessary sugar like most cereals these days seem to have. It was a bit bland & would probably take some getting used to on its own (unless you load it with sugar which of course really defeats the point of a healthy cereal), but most bran cereals are quite bland unless they add sultanas. I usually have them with fresh fruit and greek yoghurt to liven them up.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So overall, a great texture, not too sweet. I would definitely have this in my cupboard. 8/10</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div>Rachel Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01658481375303769901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926988063384150126.post-51162155128125517932011-11-24T20:56:00.004+13:002011-11-25T09:30:55.499+13:00Things I'm loving!<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.paisleyjade.com/search/label/things%20i%27m%20loving"><img alt="button2" height="160" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5211/5389998828_290f765d55_o.png%20" width="160" /></a></div><br />

<b>Wow I am so slack! It's been weeks since I last blogged so here goes...</b><br />
<br />
* I joined pinterest! Finally haha check me out <a href="https://pinterest.com/vandysmile/">here</a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
* I'm loving getting heaps of flowers from hubby's work as they are constantly trimming things.<br />
<br />
* Wondering if Master Hollywood is going to grow up to be an actor... Lots of dramas lately! How am I going to cope once he can talk properly?? Oh the tantrums<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">* I've been trying to cut costs and make presents for the mountains of 1st birthdays that are this year. Sorry about the terrible photos! I need a new camera desperately. Tutorial for the shorts found <a href="http://www.craftpassion.com/2011/07/sew-tie-hem-girl-shorts.html">here</a> and the top is based loosely from this site <a href="http://sewingforscarlett.blogspot.com/2010/11/smock-tutorial.html">here</a>...</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3wylpOrZY7A/Ts2wxLOpf3I/AAAAAAAAALc/NQNaww6i87Q/s1600/shorts+combo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3wylpOrZY7A/Ts2wxLOpf3I/AAAAAAAAALc/NQNaww6i87Q/s320/shorts+combo.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Little girls shorts with matching top</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
* This was my original top from <a href="http://www.prudentbaby.com/2010/07/snappy-toddler-dress.html">this</a> tutorial but I found it was no way going to fit a 1year old even though the pattern stated it was for 18m! I would say more a 6-9month size unless they were really skinny. But very cute nonetheless..</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UOqEbAG5gKU/Ts2xGdkQC2I/AAAAAAAAALk/xbauMIkri4U/s1600/shorts+combo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UOqEbAG5gKU/Ts2xGdkQC2I/AAAAAAAAALk/xbauMIkri4U/s320/shorts+combo1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
* I am hoping to get a few more gifts for 1st birthdays out of the way soon...<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">* We had a fabulous time at a friend of mine's 'surprise' baby shower last week. A nice dessert at Shiraz. I stumbled across this recipe today while looking for a dip recipe so I could use up my dry kidney beans in the cupboard. This is a super easy (and semi-healthy) recipe for scones. They taste great & you'd never know that they use kidney beans as one of the key ingredients! They also use some wholemeal flour which is great and a lot less butter than standard scones I believe.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lXaK-cMf5m4/TpVMxXc8F7I/AAAAAAAAAJw/hbHLLScNrKU/s1600/IMG_4486.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Ingredients:</b></div><div style="text-align: center;">1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour</div><div style="text-align: center;">1/2 cup wholemeal/whole wheat flour</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">4tsps baking powder</div><div style="text-align: center;">1tbsn granulated sugar (I used raw as it's much better for you)</div><div style="text-align: center;">1/2 tsp salt</div><div style="text-align: center;">75g butter</div><div style="text-align: center;">You can use margarine but it's not good for you :)</div><div style="text-align: center;">1cup cooked kidney beans either white or red</div><div style="text-align: center;">(I soak mine overnight or all day, tip out the water and then boil them until slightly soft, but you may have other methods)</div><div style="text-align: center;">2/3 cup milk</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lXaK-cMf5m4/TpVMxXc8F7I/AAAAAAAAAJw/hbHLLScNrKU/s1600/IMG_4486.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lXaK-cMf5m4/TpVMxXc8F7I/AAAAAAAAAJw/hbHLLScNrKU/s320/IMG_4486.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
<b>Method:</b></div><div style="text-align: center;">Sift all-purpose flour and baking powder and then stir all dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles crumbs. In a food processor or blender, puree the beans with the milk OR mash the beans & stir in the milk. Stir the mixture into the dry ingredients all at once to make a light, soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured board, sprinkle with flour & knead for about 20 seconds. Shape biscuits as you would scones by rolling (1-2cm thick), patting and cutting dough into squares (makes about 16 if doing squares) or triangle shapes or I just used a cookie cutter to make pretty heart patterns & made a lot more pieces by doing it this way. Bake at 180 degrees Celcius (or just under) for about 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. I also brushed the tops of mine with milk before cooking. If making these again, I would probably add a small amount of Parmesan cheese & perhaps some parsley or herbs.</div><br />

<div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">Is it cold today or what? Or maybe it's just me. I feel like winter has returned again, but then I look out my window and see this</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=6926988063384150126" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K3zWrKz49qM/Tn_AUS6ZgzI/AAAAAAAAAJI/ayXA9ByJ7YY/s1600/apple-tree-blossoms-art-prints-apple-blossom-buds-baslee-troutman-baslee-troutman-fine-art-prints-collections.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K3zWrKz49qM/Tn_AUS6ZgzI/AAAAAAAAAJI/ayXA9ByJ7YY/s320/apple-tree-blossoms-art-prints-apple-blossom-buds-baslee-troutman-baslee-troutman-fine-art-prints-collections.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">and I know it's definitely still spring.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I had a tiring, but wonderful weekend. Coffee with friends at the excellent Nectar! Great customer service. Even when we were the last ones there and we knew they wanted us to leave so they could clean up, we didn't get asked or even any dirty looks AND they cleaned up the mess my lovely 9month old made. IE, a lot! Without complaining, and with a smile. The food was incredible as was the coffee even if it was a bit small for my liking. I only have a pic from their website. I don't seem to carry my camera at convenient times.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wd5MqzDmaJ0/Tn_SlHNSoPI/AAAAAAAAAJM/9IPMyMHBies/s1600/nectar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wd5MqzDmaJ0/Tn_SlHNSoPI/AAAAAAAAAJM/9IPMyMHBies/s320/nectar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">A friend came over on Saturday night while hubby was away in Auckland for the France v All Blacks game. Enjoyed a salmon steak with a barley, brocolli and orange salad. Sounds like a weird combo but was delicious! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">It was quite ironic that I watched two Johnny Depp movies - Rango & The Tourist and the one I thought I was going to enjoy I didn't, while the other I thought would be filled with swearing & violence wasn't. Rango was super strange and definitely not a kids movie like I thought it would be. And the Tourist was surprisingly good. Not cliche, had a great twist at the end, very clean with little swearing with only one blasphemy. Incredible. Hardly any movies that I know of like that these days. Needless to say I watched it again today while Master T slept.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">This is a terrible pic of me and the boy but never mind. Hehe deliberately deleted the one that shows off my unflattering belly. I have been trying my hand at drafting patterns. It's definitely not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm on the right track I think. These pants are the first attempt. Anyone know of any good books on pattern drafting?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YLvNmiB9yg8/TmSkzC9XgQI/AAAAAAAAAI4/ibXOTspqO9U/s1600/IMG_4211.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YLvNmiB9yg8/TmSkzC9XgQI/AAAAAAAAAI4/ibXOTspqO9U/s320/IMG_4211.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">These were made using an easy chocolate cake recipe and simply pouring the mixture into silicone muffin cases. Yum!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8gKQzPtvMbU/TmSiv14mDAI/AAAAAAAAAIw/PRKYx2exkzk/s1600/IMG_4201.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8gKQzPtvMbU/TmSiv14mDAI/AAAAAAAAAIw/PRKYx2exkzk/s400/IMG_4201.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Master T is on the move! First crawling steps today. Nothing has been safe for awhile now (ever since he could roll over), but it's going to get worse I know. We had meant to leave Whangarei by 8:30 at the latest in order to drop hubby off in Howick and be back in Birkenhead by midday. Well of course, planning a day with a baby doesn't help get things packed very quickly. We ended up leaving at 9 & forgot the two most important things - the portacot and the previously expressed breastmilk! </div><div style="text-align: center;">On we chugged on this glorious day. I found myself getting more nervous and more shy as it came closer to the time. I had seen a few photos online and checked out most of the blogs before but only knew two people at the event. After dropping off Master T (8mnths) off at his uncles house along with the hubby and MIL, I got back in the car to make the drive. I finally arrived at the Mediterranean not long after 12. Thankfully the restaurant was pretty easy to find - I don't think I would have coped with the day if I had gotten lost! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Well all the people were lovely and friendly and I had a wonderful time. The restaurant staff were amazing as was the food. I don't have any photos as was too bummed to bring my old point and shoot along hehe everyone was pulling out flash SLR Canons left right and centre so it's just as well I think! So nice to meet everyone and put a real face to the blog. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">We headed back to Whangarei that night and arrived around 10:30pm. Needless to say a long day, but highly worth it. I feel like I am so busy. But, I am super excited for this weekend!! We are having a blogger meet up in Auckland and having never been to one before it's going to be so exciting I think! We get to make nametags for a blogger we don't know :)</div><div style="text-align: center;">If all goes to plan, here's a little sneak preview...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fj4SVSzSHOo/Tks_5YwZy5I/AAAAAAAAAHY/KPIVBOGw-XI/s1600/fabric+flower.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fj4SVSzSHOo/Tks_5YwZy5I/AAAAAAAAAHY/KPIVBOGw-XI/s320/fabric+flower.jpg" width="320" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;">And that's all you're getting! <div style="text-align: center;">We visited our local cafe last weekend... Just love the table numbers. The downside is they are always packed & their high chairs aren't very good. Here's what I've been up to recently...<br />
Making this for a special friend </div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Elephant Snuggle Toy</b></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mtsbX87Iz1w/TjkGGdq4NhI/AAAAAAAAAGk/evlUE1pJEo0/s1600/IMG_4114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mtsbX87Iz1w/TjkGGdq4NhI/AAAAAAAAAGk/evlUE1pJEo0/s320/IMG_4114.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">A wonderfully silky side and a snuggly fleece side all in pretty (manly) blues</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fDfgpU8hjsk/TjkGeGNIGTI/AAAAAAAAAGo/zetorbBTBtg/s1600/IMG_4113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fDfgpU8hjsk/TjkGeGNIGTI/AAAAAAAAAGo/zetorbBTBtg/s320/IMG_4113.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">See original tutorial <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/blog2/february2011/ElephantCuddleCushion.pdf">here</a> from Sew Mama Sew<br />
<br />
An outing to <b>Ngawha Springs</b> in Kaikohe<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NTe0bdMI2Tg/TjprEObWyNI/AAAAAAAAAGs/mSwn2x50bKQ/s1600/Ngawha_July_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NTe0bdMI2Tg/TjprEObWyNI/AAAAAAAAAGs/mSwn2x50bKQ/s320/Ngawha_July_2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> Ok so it's a bit off the beaten track and VERY old school, BUT it's almost the best in the world for the mineral content and it's cheap :) like $5 as apposed to Waiwera's however much that is nowadays! Needless to say, Master T loved it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j9D2COVs418/TjprNC59NRI/AAAAAAAAAGw/CasSWi2bWaQ/s1600/Ngawha_July_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j9D2COVs418/TjprNC59NRI/AAAAAAAAAGw/CasSWi2bWaQ/s320/Ngawha_July_4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> And I got some gorgeous pics of him (as if I didn't have enough already!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SEJ1KITEYas/TjprawGrEwI/AAAAAAAAAG0/bZFK9u_KBuU/s1600/IMG_0054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SEJ1KITEYas/TjprawGrEwI/AAAAAAAAAG0/bZFK9u_KBuU/s320/IMG_0054.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<b>I won something!!</b><br />
I never ever win competitions and even though it wasn't huge, I was sooo excited. <a href="http://www.berrypatchcottage.co.nz/categories/new-fabrics/alphabet-soup-boys-main">Here</a>'s what's coming my way in the post very soon... Some really cute fabric. Will post pictures of what I make when I get some more free time (ha)<br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Click <a href="http://www.exclusivelyfood.com.au/2006/07/unbaked-lemon-cheesecake-recipe.html">HERE</a> for the original recipe. I changed a few things so I will put the directions here.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;"><b>Base</b><br />
250g biscuits (The original recipe said to use Arnotts but I just used budget malt biscuits)<br />
120g butter, melted (the amount you need may vary, depending on the type of biscuits you use)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;">Optional: A tiny squeeze of lemon juice <br />
<br />
<b>Filling</b><br />
125g cream cheese (not light otherwise it won't set properly), softened<br />
395g (1 can) sweetened condensed milk<br />
125ml (1/2 cup) fresh lemon juice</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;">I found I needed 3lemons to get the right amount of lemon juice so I grated the lemons first to get the rind and added 1/3 to the base and then the rest to the filling to make it extra lemony.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 85%;"><br />
<b>Topping</b><br />
250ml (1 cup) cream, sweetened with sugar to taste and whipped until thick</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;">Instead of this I used passionfruit pulp and fruit of the forest jam mixed together<br />
<br />
Use a food processor or blender to finely crush the biscuits.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;">Combine crushed biscuits with melted butter.<br />
<br />
Firmly press biscuit mixture into a sprayed or greased 23cm diameter (base measurement), 3cm deep flan pan or pie plate. Use a rectangular dish if you want to serve the cheesecake in small squares or I simply used a cake tin so I could pop the bottom out and make getting it out a whole lot easier. Or use a muffin tin and make individual ones if you can be bothered - they turn out super cute!</span><span style="font-size: 85%;"> </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;">Place base in fridge to chill while making filling.<br />
<br />
Beat cream cheese in an electric mixer until completely smooth and creamy. Stop the machine occasionally and use a spatula to scrape down the side and base of the bowl. </span><span style="font-size: 85%;">With the mixer running, gradually drizzle in the condensed milk (stop to scrape the bowl down occasionally).</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;">Add the lemon juice and beat until combined. The mixture should thicken when the lemon juice is beaten in. If your filling is a little lumpy at this stage, you can pass it through a fine strainer. Spread filling over base.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;">Place cheesecake in an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 8 hours to allow the cheesecake to set.<br />
<br />
Top with sweetened whipped cream before serving. The original recipe decorated the cheesecake with grated chocolate or fruit.</span><span style="font-size: 85%;"> I simply mixed some passionfruit pulp with fruit of the forest jam and poured it over the top. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7bS43RSKndA/Tgz_ZeLpyWI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/ABg4JrHT-g8/s1600/IMG_4018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7bS43RSKndA/Tgz_ZeLpyWI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/ABg4JrHT-g8/s320/IMG_4018.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;"></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 85%;"> Mmm try not to eat more than one piece at a time!</span><span style="font-size: 85%;"> </span></div>Rachel Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01658481375303769901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926988063384150126.post-85930013275510246652011-06-27T12:26:00.000+12:002011-06-27T12:26:33.767+12:00Book Reviews<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1gZj8aWBy7g/TgfOGxM5NSI/AAAAAAAAAFA/0XlfzC-4f-M/s1600/teardrop-cooke-50.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1gZj8aWBy7g/TgfOGxM5NSI/AAAAAAAAAFA/0XlfzC-4f-M/s320/teardrop-cooke-50.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Unfortunately our flannelgraph website has had to shut down :( due to downgrading BUT the good news is, you can still read a few of your favourite reviews <a href="http://symondrake.wordpress.com/">HERE</a> and <a href="http://www.flannelgraph.blogspot.com/">HERE</a> for awhile and I have uploaded all of mine <a href="http://luvthatbum.blogspot.com/search/label/Book%20Review">HERE</a>. </div><em>Deception</em> is Book 3 in Randy <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Alcorn’s</span> <em>Ollie Chandler</em> series.<br />
<em><em></em></em><br />
<em><em> <blockquote>IN A DARK ROOM punctured by a bare hundred-watt bulb, two newspaper clippings on the card table appeared whitish gray, four others dim and yellow. Agile fingers arranged them chronologically so the handiwork could be better displayed. Should they be placed in a scrapbook? What if they were found? Of all places, surely no one would try to break into this one. The world’s full of stupid people, but not that stupid. Most of the people in the clippings had been stupid. But over the years, one by one, they’d been abruptly liberated of their stupidity. And the world had been liberated of them. A penciled list of names dropped to the table, by the playing cards, next to the clippings. It was time for another stupid person to go away. But which one? The liberator brooded thirty minutes, forearm bulging, squeezing hard a small object. Finally, one name rose to the top. The mastermind wrote the name down, then covered it with the ace of spades.<em> </em></blockquote></em></em><em><em></em></em><br />
The thing that came across the strongest for me in <span style="font-style: italic;">Deception</span> was its uniqueness. It is unlike any other book that I have read. Even <em>Deadline</em> (which is book 1 in the series) was very different to <em>Deception</em>. Also, each book is complete in itself so there is no need to read the books in order. Randy <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Alcorn</span> has this amazing sense of humour which is littered throughout the pages providing constant entertainment. I also like the way it is written entirely from a man’s perspective; (Ollie Chandler the homicide detective) his personality, character and struggles coming through to make the novel seem more real. It kept me guessing until the very impressive and surprising ending.<br />
<br />
The reason why I only gave <span style="font-style: italic;">Deception</span> a 7/10 rating was because I found it very hard to get into until about half way through the book. It could just be a personality clash (like I said earlier, Randy’s way of writing is extremely unique), but for me, it’s like committing suicide if you haven’t been ‘grabbed’ by the book by at least the 2<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">nd</span> chapter. I think most of the introduction was necessary to establish the characters fully, but it did seem slightly too long to do so.<br />
<br />
Overall, a great read and I also loved how Randy can’t help but throw in spiritual references (he is <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">after all</span> also the author of <span style="font-style: italic;">The <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Ishbane</span> Conspiracy</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Lord <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Foulgrin’s</span> Letters</span>) throughout the book. It really made me think, and gave me some great ideas for sharing my faith!<br />
<br />
Rating: 7 out of 10 <br />

The third book in the Martyr's Song Series...<br />
<blockquote><i>What happens when the evil of terrorism collides with the love of God? Deep in the Amazon jungle a young American woman and the son of plantation owners fall madly in love. For Tanya and Shannon, life is a paradise most only dream about. But today paradise ends. The jungle has hatched more than idyllic love. It has also spawned insidious evil. An evil shrouded in a plot so diabolically brilliant that all of America will be brought to her knees at the hands of a few terrorists. The plan is executed to perfection; America’s worst fears have dawned. Nothing stands in the way of terrible destruction. Except for the love of one woman. Step into the pages of a story taken from tomorrow’s headlines. A story about the true power found in the face of all our fears. The power of love.</i></blockquote>I love the way Dekker brings out his characters and works on their personalities. You almost feel by the end of the book that you could know them as intimately as a person in real life. This was what I loved about <span style="font-style: italic;">Thunder of Heaven</span>. I also love the way that a fictional story can speak volumes about real life. Sometimes we need to open our eyes a bit more to see what’s really going on outside of our cosy living room. Thunder Of Heaven is an intriguing story of what can lie beneath the surface of a seemingly picture-perfect world and if left unchecked, what atrocities evil can commit. Thankfully for me, as I despise unhappy endings, Dekker lets good win out as he does in all of his books. I must admit though, the ending did seem a bit far-fetched. But then, who can honestly understand the power of that one small word… love? An emotion, a verb, a noun, all rolled into one and perfectly describing the very essence of God and what He’s about.<br />
<br />
So if you’re up to the challenge, I dare you to open this book and see what it’s all about.<br />

And how will he survive in a legal system that crushes those who can’t afford to fight back? Mark Gillen has the storybook life other men dream of, complete with a beautiful wife and an adoring five-year-old daughter. Then his wife announces she’s leaving him. And taking their daughter with her. The other man is a famous film director with unlimited funds and the keys to stardom and wealth for Paula. How can Mark begin to compete? But the most bitter blow comes when he is kept from seeing his daughter because of false charges . . . and a legal system ill-suited for finding the truth. Forged in the darkest valley Mark has ever walked through, his faith in God may ultimately cost him everything in the eyes of the family law system. But it is the one thing that can keep him sane-and give him the strength to fight against all odds for what matters most.</i></blockquote>I like trying out new authors, though there is always that slight touch of hesitancy that comes with unexplored territory; and that the author might not live up to the standard of previously loved and enjoyed writers. James Scott Bell did not disappoint.<br />
<br />
Being a huge fan of books that contain anything to do with law and justice, <span style="font-style: italic;">Breach of Promise</span> was right up my alley and I am certain would appeal to a wide range of audiences. It had a well thought out plot line, was just the right length and ended with a jaw-dropping twist which I certainly did not see coming!<br />
<br />
I also loved the way the author describes the main character (Mark) and his struggles with everyday life; how he overcomes anger and sometimes just mucks things up and really blows it. He is a real human being, not just some perfect guy we could never become. He tries so hard to do things his way, yet has to learn that God’s way is Supreme and although we may not understand it, it is after all, the best way to go about things.<br />
<br />
I couldn’t find much wrong with <span style="font-style: italic;">Breach of Promise</span>. It was a refreshing blast of reality mixed with suspense and I certainly didn’t want to put it down!<br />
